MUST Faculty of Innovation Engineering and Yunnan Observatory, CAS Sign Cooperation Agreement

The Faculty of Innovative Engineering of Macau University of Science and Technology and the Yunnan Observatories of the Chinese Academy of Sciences held a strategic cooperation agreement signing ceremony on 28 August 2026. The two parties formed a strategic partnership to promote the project initiation and construction of the CGST and the SCOPE, with the aim of building China’s “space-ground coordinated solar storm monitoring system.” The two sides will carry out close cooperation in the research and refinement of scientific objectives, key technology breakthroughs, and data processing; jointly establish on- and off-campus practical teaching bases and organize practical teaching activities, actively exploring new models of talent cultivation; and, through their respective research platforms and disciplinary strengths, actively seek policy and funding support from relevant departments through multiple channels to promote the healthy development of the cooperation.

Representatives attending the signing ceremony from both sides included: Chang Liang, Deputy Director of Yunnan Observatory, CAS; Lin Jun, Chief Scientist of the Solar Activity and CME Theoretical Research Group; Yan Xiaoli, Member of the Observatory Committee and Chief Scientist of the Fuxian Lake Solar Observatory; Jin Zhenyu, Director of the Astronomical Technology Laboratory; Shen Chengcai, Researcher, and Ye Jing, Associate Researcher; as well as Sun Qiao, Dean of FIE, Professor Li Gang, and Assistant Professor Fu Shuai.

Witnessed by members of both teams, Deputy Director Chang Liang and Dean Sun Qiao signed the cooperation agreement on behalf of their respective institutions. The signing of this agreement marks the official establishment of their strategic partnership. Moving forward, both parties will strictly implement the cooperation mechanism, continuously deepen collaboration in scientific research, talent cultivation, and joint platform development, and gather their strengths to drive innovative development in the field of astronomical science, making joint contributions to national astronomical development.

Signing Ceremony

Following the signing of the agreement, both parties continued the Academic Symposium on Solar Activity and Space Weather at the Macau University of Science and Technology on August 29, 2026. During the symposium, Professor Jun Lin provided a comprehensive overview of recent progress in the development of the 'Ground-Space Coordinated Solar Storm Monitoring System.' He engaged in in-depth exchanges and lively discussions with participating experts on key scientific issues—such as solar eruptions and high-energy particle acceleration and propagation mechanisms—as well as cutting-edge technologies involved in related large-scale scientific facilities, including optics, thermal engineering, mechanics, electronics, new materials, advanced supercomputing, precision control, and high-performance battery energy storage. In addition, Professors Xiaoli Yan and Chengcai Shen respectively presented the Yunnan Observatories' strengths and latest scientific achievements in solar observation equipment and theoretical research on solar activity, establishing a solid scientific foundation for deepening future collaboration. Attendees unanimously agreed that the symposium was fruitful, marking a solid first step in the partnership between the two parties.
