Today's society has entered an era of intelligence, with artificial intelligence penetrating various academic disciplines. Moreover, not only are different fields of engineering science closely interconnected, but engineering disciplines also intersect deeply with management science, life sciences, and humanities. This poses significant challenges for talent cultivation in engineering science. The Department of Engineering Science at the Faculty of Innovation Engineering of Macau University of Science and Technology was established precisely to address these challenges. Its distinguishing feature is its emphasis on building students' foundational knowledge in mathematics, physics, and engineering, equipping them with a solid grounding in intelligent science and interdisciplinary fields. This fosters innovative thinking and enables them to stay abreast of the latest technological advancements. The department’s curriculum integrates related technologies such as artificial intelligence, digitalization, automation, systems engineering, biotechnology, comprehensive simulation, and management engineering, cultivating talents with lifelong learning capabilities. Currently, the department offers a doctoral program in "Intelligent Science and Systems," a master's program in "Intelligent Technology," and two undergraduate programs: "Automation & Systems Engineering" and "Interdisciplinary Engineering."
The department brings together a diverse group of internationally renowned faculty members, including seven ESI highly cited researchers and five IEEE Fellows. Faculty members are engaged in numerous research projects with ample funding. In addition, the department collaborates with many high-tech enterprises on industry-academia-research initiatives, providing students with excellent internship opportunities. We also maintain extensive international exchanges. The department is evolving into an innovative, internationally recognized top-tier academic and talent cultivation institution, training high-quality, innovative technological talents for the Greater Bay Area in the fields such as intelligent manufacturing, intelligent robotics, digital twins, biotechnology, and management engineering.
The Department of Engineering Science has achieved remarkable research results. According to the Essential Science Indicators (ESI) statistics released by Clarivate (formerly Thomson Reuters) in May 2019, the engineering science discipline of Macau University of Science and Technology entered the top 1% of global universities and research institutions in this field, with its current ranking approaching the top 0.1%. In the "ShanghaiRanking’s Global Ranking of Academic Subjects" released by Shanghai Ranking in 2023, Macau University of Science and Technology's discipline of Control Science and Control Engineering ranked within the 51-75 range globally, placing it among the top internationally.
