Recently, Professor Tao Zhang from the School of Computer Science and Engineering, Faculty of Innovation Engineering at the Macau University of Science and Technology (MUST) has been elected as a Fellow of the British Computer Society (BCS). This prestigious recognition is bestowed upon Professor Zhang for his outstanding research contributions and exceptional leadership in the field of intelligent software engineering. Being elected as a BCS Fellow is a strong affirmation of Professor Zhang’s long-term outstanding contributions to the international software engineering community. It also further highlights MUST’s growing international influence and academic standing in computer science and engineering research.

The British Computer Society (BCS), the chartered institute for IT based in the United Kingdom, boasts a global membership of over 70,000 professionals across 150 countries and regions. It grants more than 250,000 professional certifications within the industry worldwide. The BCS comprises distinguished researchers and professionals in information technology and computer science, with Fellowship being its highest grade of membership. Election to BCS Fellowship requires not only distinguished research in computing but also demonstrated exceptional leadership. Candidates undergo a rigorous, multi-dimensional evaluation process spanning at least six months, assessed by global experts on criteria including academic research caliber, leadership within the academic community, successful completion of research projects, and impact on industry-academia collaboration.
Prof. Tao Zhang is currently a Professor at the School of Computer Science and Engineering, Faculty of Innovation Engineering at the Macau University of Science and Technology. He is also a Distinguished Member of the China Computer Federation (CCF), and a Senior Member of both the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). Currently, he serves as the Founding Chair of the IEEE Computer Society Macau Chapter, the Paper Awards Chair of the IEEE Technical Committee on Software Engineering (TCSE) Conference, and is the sole Executive Committee member of Chinese descent. His primary research interests lie in intelligent software data analytics and software security. To date, he has authored over 100 papers in prestigious journals and conferences in software engineering and software security.
Professor Zhang holds editorial board positions for several authoritative journals in software engineering, including IEEE Transactions on Software Engineering, IEEE Transactions on Reliability, IEEE Open Journal of the Computer Society, Empirical Software Engineering, Journal of Systems and Software, and Science of Computer Programming. He has served as General Chair for high-level international conferences such as APSEC 2025 and SANER 2023, and as Program Committee Chair for ICSS 2026, ASSS 2025, Internetware 2024, and DSA 2021. He is also a frequent Program Committee member for the "Big Four" top-tier conferences in software engineering. His service has been recognized with Outstanding Reviewer Awards from renowned journals including TOSEM, JSS, and IST. Professor Zhang has led multiple research projects funded by institutions such as the National Natural Science Foundation of China and the Macao Science and Technology Development Fund.
