On January 23, 2026, the "2026 China-ASEAN AI Capacity-Building Training Program and High-Level Seminar on AI Frontier Technologies and Governance" was successfully held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The event was jointly organized by the Federation of Engineering Institutions of Asia and the Pacific, the Institution of Engineers Malaysia, Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman, Xiamen University Malaysia, and the Chinese Association of Automation.

This event, part of ongoing efforts to foster collaboration in the rapidly evolving field of artificial intelligence, aimed to strengthen regional ties by facilitating knowledge exchange and discussing joint strategies for responsible technological advancement.

Professor Sun Qiao, Dean of the Faculty of Innovation Engineering, was invited to attend the conference. She participated in the Roundtable Discussion: Prospects for China-ASEAN AI Cooperation and Technology Transfer and delivered a special lecture on January 24. Dean Sun challenged the notion of technology transfer by emphasizing co-creation, localization, and talent mobility, while also reminding participants of imperative for equitable development

In her special lecture entitled " Physics + AI for Prediction, Monitoring, and Decision Support", Dean Sun Qiao positioned digital twin as a practical pathway for managing complex mechanical systems. She outlined a lifecycle-evolving digital twin framework centered on system models, emphasizing hybrid approaches that fuse physics-based models with data-driven learning. Dean Sun analyzed key technologies for model evolution in dynamic environments, supported by experimental validation results from a torsion transmission test rig, and concluded by discussing how AI can further accelerate trustworthy digital twin deployment in real engineering environments.
