In the seminar, Prof. Tu introduced the six-axis femtosecond laser micro-/nanomachining centre established by his research group with funding from the Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI). The system offers translational motion along the x-, y-, and z-axes plus three rotational degrees of freedom, enabling the fabrication of complex geometries at the micro- and nanoscale. Femtosecond lasers deliver ultrahigh focused energy density, allowing precise ablation of materials including silicon, metals, alloys, glass, and polymers.

Prof. Tu presenting during the seminar
Prof. Tu presented key progress and achievements in several research areas, including biological cell dissection, bioabsorbable stents for cerebrovascular disease treatment, sensors for atmospheric-monitoring satellites, surface treatment, and fundamental studies in micro-/nanomachining technologies. He also outlined ongoing projects supported by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC), Alberta Innovates, and an industry partner.
