On August 20, 2025, a delegation led by Chair Prof. Hong K. Lo, Director of the GREAT Smart Cities Institute at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), visited the Macau University of Science and Technology (MUST). The delegation was warmly received by Chair Prof. Joseph Hun-wei Lee, Vice-Chancellor and President of MUST; Prof. Cai Zhanchuan, Director of the School of Computer Science and Engineering of the Faculty of Innovation Engineering; Prof. Lu Xiaoping, Program Director; Associate Prof. Li Dagang and Associate Prof. Liang Yanyan from the School of Computer Science and Engineering of the Faculty of Innovation Engineering; and Associate Prof. Dong Yahong from the Department of Environmental Science and Engineering.
The delegation first visited MUST LIU’s Innovation and Technology Center, gaining insights into cutting-edge research platforms in autonomous driving, materials science, and medical robotics. Subsequently, they toured the MUST History and Achievements Exhibition Hall and the Information Technology Exhibition Hall, gaining a comprehensive understanding of MUST’s development history, academic achievements, and the WeMust unified smart campus service platform.

Following the tour, the two sides held an exchange meeting. Prof. Cai introduced the research directions and achievements of the Faculty of Innovation Engineering and the Macao Institute of Smart City. Prof. Lo then presented an overview of the GREAT Smart Cities Institute, highlighting its three research clusters- Smart Mobility, Green Building and Artificial Intelligence of Things and key projects within each cluster.
During the exchange session, Associate Prof. Liang Yanyan showcased technical achievements in the “Defect Detection System,” highlighting innovative breakthroughs in smart inspection. Associate Prof. Dong Yahong shared insights on research and applications related to campus green building. Dr. Ng Ka Fai, Senior Research Engineer of The HKUST GREAT Smart Cities Institute also presented transport projects in collaboration with Hong Kong Transport Department and Police Force and explored how these solutions could be adapted for Macau to improve local traffic flow, leading to in-depth discussions on smart city development, academic collaboration, and talent cultivation.
