With the 25th anniversary of Macau University of Science and Technology (MUST), the 34th Wireless and Optical Communications Conference (WOCC2025), jointly organized by MUST and Guangdong University of Science and Technology, was successfully hosted at MUST from May 20th to 22nd, 2025. This international conference focused wireless networks and communications, optical communications and networks, and machine learning and AI for communications. The conference aimed to showcase the latest innovations, explore cutting-edge technologies, exchange research ideas, and delve into frontier issues.
The three-day conference featured four keynote speeches and six thematic technical sessions, attracting over 200 scholars, industry experts, and guests from around the world. They engaged in a series of exciting and in-depth exchanges and discussions centered on the latest research findings and development trends in wireless and optical communication science and technology, injecting new wisdom and impetus into the industry's advancement.

President Joseph Hun-wei Lee’s Speech
At the opening ceremony, Chair Professor Joseph Hun-wei LEE, Vice-Chancellor and President of MUST, reviewed the institution's development journey in his speech. He noted that since its establishment in 2000, MUST has grown into a young, comprehensive, research-oriented, and innovative university. Rooted in Macao, the University has expanded its influence across the Greater Bay Area, contributed to national development, and remained committed to talent cultivation and societal progress.
Highlighting recent achievements, Prof. LEE emphasized that MUST has been ranked among the top 300 globally in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings for six consecutive years since 2020. He mentioned the "Macao Science I Satellite" project, which has established a platform for international scientific collaboration with partners worldwide - such as the European Space Agency – thus fulfilling Macao’s role as an international bridge between the East and West.
Prof. LEE underscored the significance of the International Conference on Wireless and Optical Communications, now in its 34th year, as a pivotal global platform for communication experts. He urged participants to generate insights and foster collaborations during the conference, while also cordially inviting attendees to explore Macao – a city renowned for its harmonious blend of Eastern and Western cultural heritage and vibrant cosmopolitan atmosphere.
President Liang Ruixiong’s Speech
Subsequently, Prof. Liang Ruixiong, President of Guangdong University of Science and Technology (GUST), noted that GUST, established in 2003, is a young and multi-disciplinary university with engineering at its core. The university's vision is to build a century-lasting institution and to nurture top talents for industry. Prof. Liang emphasized that with cutting-edge advances in 5G and 6G, high-speed fiber networks, and quantum communication, these technologies are breaking through technical bottlenecks and elevating global network connectivity to new heights. This conference provided a valuable exchange platform for top talents from academia and industry to gather, explore the latest trends, and shape the future of communications. He hoped the conference would inspire innovative exchanges, clarify the development direction in the era of intelligent computing, and accelerate the transformation of scientific research achievements into practical applications.
Director Zhang Du’s Speech
Next, Chair Prof. Zhang Du, Director of the School of Computer Science and Engineering of the Faculty of Innovation Engineering of MUST, emphasized in his speech that the WOCC is a pivotal platform in global communications and networking. Over its 34-year history, the conference has driven cross-disciplinary innovations in wireless networks, optical communications, and AI technologies. WOCC 2025 features an array of plenary speeches and invited keynotes from prominent research and industry leaders. It also has an exceptional technical program. The conference includes the Charles Kao Best Paper Award, recognizing outstanding contributions to the field. Prof. Zhang expressed his appreciation to the conference General Chairs and Program Chairs, committee members, external reviewers, authors, and sponsors. In closing, he encouraged participants to engage deeply with the high-quality technical sessions and seize opportunities to strengthen exchanges and collaboration during the conference.

The conference invited authoritative experts in the field of wireless and optical communications as keynote speakers: Prof. Liu Yunhao, Dean of the Global Innovation Exchange Institute of Tsinghua University; Prof. Dusit Niyato, Professor at the Nanyang Technological University; Chair Prof. Lu Chao, Director of the Photonics Research Institute of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, and Prof. Zhou Meng Chu, Distinguished Professor at the New Jersey Institute of Technology and Professor at MUST. The four keynote speakers provided in-depth analyses of the latest research findings and development trends in wireless and optical communication science and technology from multiple perspectives.

In the subsequent six thematic technical sessions, invited speakers and over 60 authors shared their latest research findings on topics such as Wireless Networks and Communications, Optical Communications and Networks, and Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence. Ideas sparked intensely here, offering many new insights and directions for research and development in the field of wireless and optical communications.
The successful hosting of the 34th Wireless and Optical Communications Conference has built a high-end academic exchange platform for researchers and technical experts in the wireless and optical communications field. Through seminars and showcases of technological achievements, the conference highlighted key technologies and future development trends in wireless and optical communications. MUST will take this conference as a new starting point to further strengthen the collaborative innovation mechanism of basic research and applied development, deepen the cooperation model of Research-Academia-Industry Sectors, continuously enhance its international academic influence in the field of wireless and optical communications technology, and provide strong support for the innovative development of global wireless and optical communication technology.
