School of Computer Science and Engineering 25th Anniversary Alumni Homecoming Day: Renewing the Bond, Envisioning the Future

On April 26, 2025, the School of Computer Science and Engineering (SCSE) and the SCSE Alumni Association jointly organized its 25th Anniversary Alumni Homecoming Day. Distinguished guests in attendance included: Prof. Pang Chuan, Vice President of MUST and Chairman of the General Assembly of MUST Alumni Federation; Chair Prof. Zhang Du, Director of the SCSE; Prof. Ding Li Ya, Former Dean of the Faculty of Information Technology; Dr. Ma Hoi Sun, Vice Chairman of the General Assembly of MUST Alumni Federation; Mr. Benny Chau, President of the SCSE Alumni Association; Mr. Alex Choi, Chairman of the SCSE Alumni Association; Mr. Mark Chan, Chairman of Supervisory Board of the SCSE Alumni Association; and industry experts, alumni, and nearly 100 faculty members and students.

Vice President Pang Chuan’s Remarks

Prof. Pang Chuan, Vice President of MUST and Chairman of the General Assembly of MUST Alumni Federation, expressed heartfelt gratitude to alumni and individuals from all sectors who have consistently supported SCSE and its alumni community over the years. Reflecting on SCSE’s development, he highlighted that its predecessor, the Faculty of Information Technology (FI), has adhered to the university’s motto of “Dedication to practical studies, Enhancement of knowledge, Ability and Quality” over 25 years of dedicated efforts. Today, it stands as a globally recognized institution and a fertile ground for nurturing innovative talents and achieving breakthroughs in research—a legacy built on the vision and dedication of successive Deans.

Prof. Pang highly commended the over 2,600 alumni who have distinguished themselves globally, whether by holding key roles in multinational corporations, educating future generations in academia, or pioneering entrepreneurial ventures, all embodying the spirit of the university’s motto. He also thanked returning graduates for sharing their expertise and encouraged alumni to frequently return to their alma mater to pass on their experiences. In closing, he emphasized that the MUST Alumni Federation will continue to build platforms to unite strengths and foster collaboration.

Director Zhang Du’s Speech

Chair Prof. Zhang Du, Director of the School of Computer Science and Engineering, extended his welcome and gratitude to alumni. He recounted SCSE’s evolution into a key player in the Greater Bay Area’s tech innovation landscape, attributing its achievements to the dedication of faculty, students, and alumni. Notable milestones include the computer science field ranked by the Clarivate Essential Science Indicators (ESI) in the top 1% worldwide in 2021 and the AI field being ranked at 93rd worldwide in the 2024 U.S. News & World Report’s Best Global Universities by Subject.

Looking ahead, Chair Prof. Zhang pledges that SCSE will push the boundaries of knowledge, cultivate visionary talents, and redefine the future of computing and engineering. He encouraged alumni to maintain close ties with the school and together write the next chapter of excellence.

Former deans of FI also delivered speeches—in person, via video, or in writing—reminiscing about pivotal moments in the school’s history, creating a heartfelt and vibrant atmosphere.

The subsequent expert and alumni sharing seminar session was vibrant and insightful. Expert and Alumni representatives from diverse fields shared their experiences and achievements. Dr. Feng Shengzhong, Head Researcher at the Guangdong Institute of Intelligent Science and Technology, discussed cutting-edge trends in computer science field; Dr. Jolly Wong, MUST Guest Professor, shared with alumni how to enhance career development opportunities through academic accreditation; Dr. Ding Ye, Founder and Chief Technology Officer of Cephalon AI, recounted his entrepreneurial journey and technological innovations in the industrial sector; Mr. Alex Choi, Co-founder of MTel Telecom Co., Ltd., shared his startup experiences in the Greater Bay Area; Dr. Wang Junlin, Professor at Guangdong University of Technology, presented his academic research achievements and insights; and Mr. Michael Xu, Software Engineer at Apple Inc., reflected on his overseas employment experiences and professional growth. These discussions delivered cutting-edge industry insights and invaluable experiences, fostering dynamic exchanges of ideas and inspiration among participants.

Tour of SCSE Laboratories and MUST LIU’s Innovation and Technology Center

In the afternoon, alumni toured SCSE’s laboratories and the MUST LIU’s Innovation and Technology Center. The SCSE’s laboratories evoked nostalgic memories of their student days, while the MUST LIU’s Innovation and Technology Center’s advanced research facilities and ongoing projects showcased SCSE’s scientific prowess and commitment to tech commercialization.

The day was concluded with a banquet, where alumni reconnected over shared memories and laughters, reigniting old friendships and reliving their school days at MUST.

The homecoming day strengthened bonds between alumni, SCSE, and the university while uniting efforts to propel SCSE’s future. With the collective dedication of its community, SCSE is poised to achieve greater heights, contributing to technological innovation in the Greater Bay Area and beyond.
