FIE Distinguished Lecture Series Session II — “HKUST's Education System for Nurturing the Next-Generation Innovators +Edge Intelligence: Multi-Modality Sensing to Revolutionize Chronic Diseases Management”

2026/03/20

The Faculty of Innovation Engineering (FIE) at Macau University of Science and Technology (MUST) is committed to promoting “interdisciplinary innovation.” To foster an open and diverse cross-disciplinary learning environment and cultivate outstanding leaders in science and engineering, the Faculty has specially organized the Distinguished Lecture Series, inviting internationally renowned scholars to share their valuable experiences in interdisciplinary research and education. lecture of this series was successfully held on March 19, 2026, at the MUST LIU’s Innovation and Technology Center.

This lecture featured Chair Professor Qian Zhang from the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology as the keynote speaker. Guests in attendance included Professor Sun Qiao, Dean of FIE; Professor Li Jian Qing, Assistant Director of the School of Computer Science and Engineering (SCSE) of FIE; Associate Professor Yang Lei, Undergraduate Program Director of FIE; Professor Jolly Wong, Guest Professor and Partnership Development Advisor of FIE; Associate Professor Cheang Chak Fong, Laboratory Coordinator of SCSE as well as faculty researchers and numerous participants interested in science and engineering.

The theme of the second lecture was “HKUST's Education System for Nurturing the Next-Generation Innovators + Edge Intelligence: Multi-Modality Sensing to Revolutionize Chronic Diseases Management”. In her presentation, Chair Professor Zhang pointed out that with the continuous acceleration of population aging, the number of patients with chronic diseases continues to rise, leading to increasing overall healthcare costs for society. Her research team has proposed a full life-cycle health management model centered on IoT-based multimodal sensing combined with artificial intelligence algorithms, enabling early disease diagnosis, continuous health evaluation, and rehabilitation guidance, thereby reducing medical costs.

Chair Professor Zhang also presented several representative research achievements during the lecture, including cuffless continuous blood pressure monitoring, home-based monitoring for Parkinson’s disease, and assessment and training for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. These studies not only demonstrate the vast application potential of intelligent sensing and artificial intelligence technologies in healthcare, but also provide important new insights for innovations in future chronic disease management models. Chair Professor Zhang also shared about the Division of Integrative Systems and Design, which she founded to nurture a new generation of innovators capable of working across multiple disciplines and creating disruptive innovations to address the world’s greatest challenges.

Lecture by Chair Professor Zhang

As one of the FIE Distinguished Lecture Series (2026), this lecture provided participants with valuable insights into Chair Professor Zhang Qian’s pioneering work in education and research. It also offered a deeper understanding of her latest research achievements and practical application experience. Moving forward, FIE will continue to invite leading experts, promote academic excellence, strengthen interdisciplinary collaboration, and cultivate tomorrow’s leaders in science and engineering.
