MUST Successfully Hosts International Conference on Analysis and Applications - In Commemoration of Hua Loo Keng

2025/11/10

On the occasion of the 115th anniversary of Prof. Hua Loo Keng’s birth, the “International Conference on Analysis and Applications - In Commemoration of Hua Loo Keng,” jointly hosted by the Macao Centre for Mathematical Sciences of Macau University of Science and Technology (MUST), the Academy of Mathematics and Systems Science of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and the Hua Loo Keng Center for Mathematical Sciences, was successfully held at MUST from October 31st to November 3rd, 2025. With the theme of “Promoting Prof. Hua Loo Keng’s mathematical ideas, reviewing his mathematical contributions, and focusing on breakthroughs and applications at the frontier of analytical mathematics,” the conference not only provided a high-quality academic exchange platform for experts and scholars in the global field of analytical mathematics but also promoted in-depth collaboration between this field and other branches of mathematics, injecting new vitality into the innovative development of the discipline. The conference attracted more than 150 top mathematicians and students from around the world.

At the opening ceremony, Chair Prof. Joseph Hun-wei LEE, Vice-Chancellor and President of MUST, commemorated Prof. Hua Loo Keng’s outstanding contributions, noting that Prof. Hua, as a world-renowned mathematician, was a founder and pioneer in fields such as several complex variables, analytic number theory, classical groups, and matrix geometry in China. His academic monographs and popular science works showcased the wisdom of Chinese mathematicians to the world, while the “optimization method” and “overall planning method” he advocated deeply applied mathematical knowledge to national economic development. As an outstanding educator, he trained a group of top mathematical talents, and his scientific spirit and educational philosophy have had a far-reaching impact.

President Lee also introduced MUST’s development history and achievements. He mentioned that since its establishment in 2000, MUST has always adhered to the mission of “rooted in Macau, expanding into the Greater Bay Area, and serving the nation.” Looking to the future, President Lee stated that MUST will continue to promote interdisciplinary research and internationalization. Its Faculty of Innovation Engineering and Medical Sciences Division will be further developed into sources of cutting-edge technology to meet the innovation needs of the Hengqin Guangdong-Macau In-Depth Cooperation Zone and the Greater Bay Area. The university will jointly develop new higher education programs with renowned international partners to help Macau build a hub for international scientific and technological talent. He emphasized that the multidisciplinary advantages of the Faculty of Innovation Engineering will provide strong support for the cross-integration of mathematics with computer science, environmental science, medical science, and other fields.

President Joseph Hun-wei Lee’s Address

Academician Zhou Xiangyu, Chairman of the Conference Academic Committee, delivered the opening speech. He highly praised Prof. Hua Loo Keng’s pioneering contributions to mathematics, pointing out that Prof. Hua Loo Keng’s academic ideas have not only profoundly influenced the development of mathematics in China but also hold an important position in the global mathematical community. He stated that the conference, themed “Analysis and Applications,” is both an inheritance of Prof. Hua Loo Keng’s mathematical spirit and a focus on the frontier areas of analytical mathematics. He looked forward to participants engaging in in-depth exchanges of research results through the conference, promoting new breakthroughs in theoretical innovation and practical applications of analytical mathematics, and contributing to the development of the discipline and national scientific and technological progress.
