The Faculty of Innovation Engineering (FIE) at Macau University of Science and Technology (MUST) marked the successful launch of its 2025 Fall Interdisciplinary Science and Engineering (ISE) on September 11, 2025, at the MUST’s LIU Innovation and Technology Center. Designed to foster a dynamic learning environment, the series brings together experts from different fields in science and engineering disciplines to give talks of interdisciplinary topics and to share their insights and experiences.
The inaugural lecture was delivered by Professor Hu Shi-Min, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Professor at the Department of Computer Science and Technology at Tsinghua University. President Hun-wei LEE formally presented Professor Hu Shi-Min with a commemorative gift on behalf of MUST.

Professor Hu Shi-Min delivered a keynote speech titled "Backbones and Deep Learning Framework for Visual Computing". More than 80% of the information humans acquire comes from vision. We refer to the media that carry visual information—namely images, video, and 3D geometry—as visual media. Visual media computing, an interdisciplinary field integrating computer graphics, computer vision, image and video processing, geometric computing, and machine learning, serves as a powerful approach for understanding and transforming the real world. Professor Hu introduced Tsinghua University's foundational work in building visual media computing from both algorithmic and framework perspectives, specifically addressing the development of backbone networks for deep learning in visual media, the deep learning framework - Jittor, and the techniques for foundation models, including heterogeneous computing platforms as well as efficient training and inference strategies for foundation models.

The ISE lecture series provided a valuable opportunity for the University faculty and students to communicate and learn, enriching their knowledge and skills in interdisciplinary science and engineering, and enabling them to achieve outstanding results in their future work and studies. Through the lecture series, the Faculty of Innovation Engineering will continue to foster interdisciplinary research and integration, and to contribute to cultivating tomorrow’s leaders in science and engineering disciplines.
