The 2025 ASC Student Supercomputer Challenge Finals took place from May 10 to 14 at Qinghai University, where the Macau University of Science and Technology (MUST) Supercomputing Team secured both the First Prize and Most Popular Team Award – marking their second consecutive year of finals success.
Comprising undergraduate students from the Faculty of Innovation Engineering (FIE) – team leader Qin Junshuo, members Wu Yuze, Mi Xinran, Wang Junjie, Liu Xiangyu, and advisor Associate Professor Cheang Chak Fong – the team triumphed in cutting-edge challenge domains: RNA methylation modification site detection, cosmic neutrino detection simulation, DeepSeek inference optimization, Tibetan Plateau climate modeling, AlphaFold3 inference optimization, along with HPL and HPCG supercomputing benchmarks. Competing against 24 elite global universities, MUST's innovative submissions secured their honor. Their interdisciplinary collaboration earned recognition from both judges and peers, culminating in the dual accolade.
Reflecting on the achievement, Professor Cheang noted: “As the world's largest student supercomputing competition now in its 12th iteration, ASC represents Asia’s premier high-performance computing (HPC) proving ground. It demands mastery of cluster architecture design and algorithm optimization – skills rooted in computer architecture, network systems, and algorithmic theory, yet ultimately driven by students’ self-directed exploration beyond classroom boundaries.” He emphasized the team’s growth:
“Despite initial experience gaps, our members evolved into specialists through iterative learning, each contributing unique strengths. The Most Popular Team Award particularly showcases their proactive knowledge-sharing with global counterparts.” Regarding future development, Cheang added: “Systematized knowledge transfer will be prioritized – not merely chasing accolades, but instilling the tenacity that fuels scientific breakthroughs.”
