In response to the Macao SAR Government's policies on promoting science education and supporting local youth in their academic and diversified development, the launch ceremony of the "Macau High School Students Research Internship Program" organized by the Faculty of Innovation Engineering at the Macau University of Science and Technology (MUST) was successfully held at the MUST LIU’s Innovation and Technology Center on February 13, 2025.

This event marks the official launching the Macau High School Students Research Internship Program.
President Joseph Hun-wei LEE delivered a speech
The ceremony started with a welcome speech delivered via video by the Chair Prof. Joseph Hun-wei Lee, Vice Chancellor and President of MUST. President Lee stated that since its establishment in 2000, MUST has become the largest and most comprehensive university in Macao. In order to strengthen the engineering disciplines and stipulating more coherent academic planning and development of areas of excellence, the university declared the establishment of Faculty of Innovation Engineering (FIE) on March, 2022. In recent years, the Faculty of Innovation Engineering has actively engaged with secondary schools through campus outreach programs and launched the Innovation Engineering Scholarship to cultivate local technological talent. The newly launched internship program in collaboration with Hou Kong Middle School aims to build a bridge for Macao's high school students to access scientific research. During the internship period, the faculty's professorial team will provide full support, leveraging their international expertise and cutting-edge research facilities to comprehensively develop students' scientific capabilities. President Lee encouraged participants to maintain their curiosity and dare to explore during the internship. He expressed hope that the "seeds of scientific research" planted in students' minds would thrive in MUST's nurturing environment, ultimately contributing to Macao's and the nation's scientific innovation endeavors in the future.
Principal Iao Tun Ieong delivered a speech
Then, Mr. Iao Tun Ieong, Principal of Hou Kong Middle School extended congratulations on behalf of the school to MUST for its achievements in scientific research and education. He highlighted that Hou Kong Middle School has established a "Smart Science and Technology Experimental Class" in response to societal needs, demonstrating its commitment to nurturing students' technological innovation capabilities. Principal Iao emphasized that this internship program offers valuable research opportunities, helping to nurture future talent for Macao's technological development. He reaffirmed the school's dedication to fostering students' innovative practical abilities, while expressing gratitude to the professors and researchers of MUST's Faculty of Innovation Engineering for their expert guidance.
Prof. Li Xiao Dong introduced the research internship program
Following this, Prof. Li Xiao Dong, Assistant Dean of the Faculty of Innovation Engineering, introduced the content and objectives of the research internship program. The " Macau High School Students Research Internship Program " aiming to provide high school students in Macau with the opportunity to intern under the guidance of professors and researchers. The program will run from February to July, 2025. Participating students will engage in research discussions, experiment observations, and hands-on operations under the guidance of professors and research teams, gaining valuable research experience.

This research internship program covers several cutting-edge and challenging scientific projects. At the launch ceremony, we are honored to invite Prof. Zhang Xiaoping, Deputy Director of Space Science Institute, and Lecturer Liu Zige from the Department of Engineering Science, to provide participants with insightful explanations of their respective research projects. This will help students establish a solid foundation for their future involvement in research internships program.

Following the successful conclusion of the launch ceremony, teachers and students from Hou Kong Middle School toured the scientific research facilities and achievement exhibitions at the MUST LIU’s Innovation and Technology Center. They engaged in in-depth discussions with internship mentors, fostering mutual understanding and laying thorough groundwork for the upcoming research internships.
The " Macau High School Students Research Internship Program" not only provides local students with a rare opportunity for hands-on scientific engagement but also cultivates a new generation of talent for Macao's future research endeavors.
