The Seventh Seminar of the Interdisciplinary Science and Engineering Lecture Series (Fall) - "Emerging Contaminants and Their Management" was Successfully Held at MUST

2024/11/15

To promote academic exchanges and knowledge sharing, and enhance the knowledge and understanding of science and engineering fields among college students and teaching staff, the Faculty of Innovation Engineering of MUST conducts the Interdisciplinary Science and Engineering (ISE) Lecture Series (Fall) by inviting well-known scholars and professionals from different fields to share their insights on the latest research results and application practices in science and engineering. The seventh seminar of the ISE Lecture Series were held on the afternoon of November 14, 2024 at the MUST LIU’s Innovation and Technology Center.

The lecture was hosted by Chair Professor Li Zhi Wu, assistant dean of Faculty of Innovation Engineering, and attended by Professor Li Liang from Department of Materials Science and Engineering at Faculty of Innovation Engineering, Assistant Professor Li Ying, Assistant Professor Jiang Ya Nan, Assistant Professor Wang Qun, Assistant Professor Wei Yan Fu and Assistant Professor Wu Yang from Department of Environmental Science and Engineering. Faculty of Innovation Engineering sincerely welcomed the graduate students and postdoctoral researchers from the FIE, as well as people interested in science and engineering to participate in this ISE Lecture Series and discuss the importance of interdisciplinary studies and future development directions.

The seventh lecture of the series, "Emerging Contaminants and Their Management" was given by Academician Yu Gang, Dean of the Advanced Interdisciplinary Institute of Environment and Ecology at Beijing Normal University (Zhuhai campus). In the speech, he explained the definition, main categories, and risk hazards of ECs, introduce the main national actions and future priority work recommendations in managing ECs, and, on this basis, analyze the urgent need for interdisciplinary research in environment, chemistry, materials, biology, and information sciences to overcome bottlenecks in green alternatives, rapid screening, process emission reduction, and harmless disposal technologies for new pollutants. Academician Yu Gang said that emerging contaminants (ECs) are widely used in industry, agriculture, and daily life, entering environmental media such as water, air, and soil during production, use, and consumption, thereby posing hazards or risks to human health and ecosystems. The management of ECs not only acts as a catalyst for building a Beautiful China and Healthy China but is also the engine for high-quality development in the governance of new pollutants.
