The Third Academic Committee Meeting of the National Observation and Research Station of Coastal Ecological Environments in Macao (referred to as the “Macao National Station”) was successfully held on the morning of December 5, 2024, in room N502 at the Macau University of Science and Technology (MUST).
Attendees included President Hun-wei Lee of MUST, Deputy Director Ip Kwok Lam of the Macau Environmental Protection Bureau, Executive Committee Member Ip Kui Lam of the Science and Technology Development Fund of Macau, Chairman of the Academic Committee of the Macao National Station, Academician Yang Zhifeng (Guangdong University of Technology), Academician Liu Wenqing (Anhui Institute of Optics and Fine Mechanics, Chinese Academy of Sciences), Researcher Li Fangbai (Guangdong Provincial Academy of Eco-environmental Science), and Professor Ma Yibing, Director of the Macao National Station. Other participants included representatives from the Macau Environmental Protection Bureau, the Science and Technology Development Fund of Macau, Maritime and Water Bureau, Jinan University, and faculty members from the Faculty of Innovation Engineering at MUST. Additionally, Deputy Director Lu Fan of the National Science and Technology Infrastructure Center, Ministry of Science and Technology, China, Vice Chairman of the Academic Committee of the Macao National Station, Academician Zhang Yuanhang (Peking University), Committee Members Academician Zhu Yongguan (Institute of Urban Environment, Chinese Academy of Sciences), Academician He Hong (Research Center for Eco-Environmental Sciences, Chinese Academy of Sciences), and Researcher Wang Zifa (Institute of Atmospheric Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences) virtually participated in the meeting.
Speeches were delivered by Deputy Director Lu Fan, Deputy Director Ip Kwok Lam, and President Lee Hun Wai on behalf of the National Science and Technology Infrastructure Center, Ministry of Science and Technology, China, the Macau Environmental Protection Bureau, and MUST, the supporting unit of the Macao National Station, respectively.
Following that, Director Ma Yibing presented the Macao National Station's work report, detailing the progress made over the past year. This includes advancements in scientific research standards, talent development, team building, and organizational systems, laying a solid foundation for future construction and technological innovation. Additionally, efforts were made to promote popular science in Macau, organize international conferences and exchange activities, and invite renowned academicians to deliver special lectures. Over the past year, the Macao National Station achieved breakthroughs in research project funding, with an additional 17.64275 million MOP and 1.179 million RMB. In terms of academic achievements, a total of 63 papers were published, including 58 SCI papers in international scientific journals. Significant results were obtained in areas such as digital twin technology and air quality, with enhanced instruments and equipment aiding the training of numerous masters’, doctoral, and postdoctoral students. Moreover, the Macao National Station actively strengthened integration with environmental and interdisciplinary fields, bringing in international talent to enhance the international perspective of the research team. In 2024, the Macao National Station continued to conduct monitoring of soil, sediments, atmosphere, water quality, and organisms, and for the first time, began monitoring new pollutants, actively collaborating with the Special Administrative Region (SAR) government to assist in environmental management. The station set up buoy comparison programs, emission flux, and coastal sediment water flux observation, and established an atmospheric ozone inventory.
The Academic Committee highly praised the development and achievements of the Macao National Station since its establishment and provided suggestions and guidance for the 2025 work plans and research directions.
Finally, President Lee Hun Wai and Director Ma Yibing, on behalf of MUST and the Macao National Station respectively, expressed heartfelt gratitude to the committee members for acknowledging the station's accomplishments. They pledged to further optimize the development of the field station based on the committee's suggestions, continuously promote the transformation and application of research results, and provide robust support to the nation and the SAR government.
