Compulsory Courses

MEMZ01 Water Quality Control Process (3 credits)

This course describes the technological and regulatory changes that have occurred over the last ten years in this discipline, including: improved techniques for the characterization of wastewaters; improved fundamental understanding of many of the existing unit operations and processes used for wastewater treatment, especially those processes used for the biological removal of nutrients; greater implementation of several newer treatment technologies; greater emphasis on advanced wastewater treatment and risk assessment for water reuse applications).

MEMZ02 Environmental Impact Assessment (3 credits)

Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) is the official appraisal process to identify, predict, evaluate and justify the ecological, social, and related biophysical effects of a proposed policy, program or project on the environment. It provides insight on alternatives and measures to be adopted before any commitment, thus helps in important decision-making.

MEMZ03 Solid Waste Management and Reuse(3 credits)

The course defines solid waste, identifies it's characteristics, it's types, components and places of production, the practical means of its extraction and collection, then describers how it can be processed, recycled and used, up to its final disposal.

MEMZ04 Atmospheric Environment (3 credits)

The course discusses the sources and origin, the physical and chemical process, the management and pollution control process of the air pollution issues.

MEMZ05 Environmental Law (3 credits)

The course will systematically introduce the basic concepts, principles, and framework of the Environmental Protection Law in China; the important environmental quality standards and pollution control standards; and the practical cases of the environmental illegal activities .

MEMZ06 Environment and Sustainable Development (3 credits)

The promotion of sustainable development opens up the debates surrounding our relationship with the natural world, what constitutes social progress, and the character of development in the present and into the future. The course investigates this subject across different socio-political and economic contexts. It combines an examination of the institutional engagement with sustainable development at a global level, with an empirically informed discussion on challenges facing high consumption societies, economies in transition and third world countries in their efforts to achieve sustainable development.

Elective Courses

MEME01 Environmental Planning and Management (3 credits)

This couse focuses on environmental planning and management. Environmental problems are not purely scientific; some of the major problems deal with poor management and the inability to involve people in environmental decision making process. The approach taken in this course is to review environmental problems as they are affected by poor planning and management. Understanding of management issues involved will help to get top management to buy into environmental management. The tendency is for top management to view environmental management efforts as expensive and wasteful to an organization.

MEME02 Climate Change (3 credits)

The course introduces the basic concepts and origins of climate change, the impacts of climate extremes on biodiversity, carbon storage in tree plantations, and the relationship between precipitation and vegetation, etc. The course will be of interest to students, researchers, academics, and policy makers who are concerned about abrupt climate change and its potential impact on society.

MEME03 International Environmental Law (3 credits)

This course provides a concise, conceptually clear, and legally rigorous introduction to contemporary international environmental law and practice. The course covers all the major multilateral environmental agreements, paying particular attention to their underlying structure, their main legal provisions, and their practical operation.

MEME04 Energy and Environment (3 credits)

The course describes the state of the art at the interface between energy and environmental research.

MEME05 Environmental Chemistry (3credits)

The course describes those chemical principles which underpin the natural processes occurring within and between the air, water, and soil, and explores how human activities impact on these processes, giving rise to environmental issues of global concern. 

MEME06 Statistics (3 credits)

In this course, students will learn basic statistics tools, such as estimation, hypothesis testing, regression, etc., to analyze and interpret data. Students will also learn to use certain statistics software, such as SPSS, Excel, etc.

MEME07 Managerial Decision Methods (3 credits)

This course focuses on how to use statistics and other quantitative methods to make managerial decisions.

MEME08 Information Service Management (3 credits)

This course seeks to introduce students to the idea of service as a science, in which service quality can be measured using various metrics. Then, students will be introduced to ideas of how to manage the performance of service science to a particular standard of performance measures.

MEME09 Special Topics for Environmental Science and Management(3 credits)

The course will introduce the frontier topics, ideas, and technologies of environmental management and sciences. Some famous scholars will be invited to share their experiences and minds in this course.

Degree Requirements

Students are required to complete the six core courses from Table 1 and three elective courses from Table 2 during the first three semesters to gain 27 credits. After finishing each course, students will be assessed based on regulations established by the instructor and the Macau Environmental Research Institute. Students are required to complete an original research master’s thesis which is not less than 20,000 words and pass the thesis oral defense to gain 12 credits.

Learning Time

The duration for taking all courses is 18 months and the duration for thesis writing is 6 months. Classes will generally be scheduled at nights (19:00-22:00) in weekdays or weekend.

Qualifications of Graduation

Upon approval from the Senate of the University, a Master’s Degree will be conferred on a student when he or she has: 1. Completed and met the requirements prescribed in the study plan of his or her program within the specific study period, and achieved a cumulative GPA of 2.50 or above (excluding dissertation) 2. Abided by the regulations of the University 3. Cleared all fees and charges and returned all University’s property and equipment borrowed If students pass all courses required in Table 1 and 2 above with a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or above, but fail to submit or pass the final thesis oral defense during the specified period, he/she can only get a completion certificate.
